The government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro issued a statement early Saturday morning rejecting what it described as military aggression carried out by the United States.
The statement reported that attacks occurred in the capital, Caracas, as well as in the states of Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira. In response, Maduro declared a national state of emergency and called on social and political forces to activate mobilization plans.
On Saturday morning, loud explosions and powerful sounds were heard in Caracas, along with low-flying aircraft, amid reports that U.S. President Donald Trump had ordered strikes against the South American nation, according to The Guardian.
The report also noted that the southern parts of the city experienced power outages.
In the early hours of Saturday, neighboring Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro stated on social media that Venezuela was under attack.
He wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that Caracas was being bombed by missiles at that very moment and called for an urgent and immediate session of the United Nations Security Council.
