Iraqi Parliament Sets January 5 2026 as Deadline for Presidential Candidacy Applications.

The Iraqi Council of Representatives has set Monday, January 5, 2026, as the final deadline for submitting applications for the position of President of the Republic. Candidates must be Iraqi by birth, at least 40 years old, possess political experience and a university degree, and must not have been convicted of crimes involving moral turpitude.

In a statement the Presidency of the Council confirmed that the deadline for candidacy submissions is Monday, January 5, 2026, until the end of official working hours.

The Council had previously announced on December 31 the opening of the nomination period for three days, in accordance with Nomination Law No. 8 of 2012, inviting eligible individuals to submit their official applications.

According to the law, candidates must be born to Iraqi parents, be fully competent, be at least 40 years old, be of good reputation, have political experience, and hold at least a bachelor's degree. They must also not have been convicted of crimes involving dishonor or be subject to de-Baathification procedures.

The Iraqi Constitution mandates that the Council of Representatives must elect a president within 30 days of its first session, which was held on December 29.
