Transitional Syrian President Ahmed Al-sharaa revealed on Monday details of his detention in Iraq and his transfers between four prisons.
In a podcast with Alastair Campbell, former spokesperson for former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Rory Stewart, former British Conservative minister, Al-Sharaa said, "My father was a political refugee in Iraq and wrote about political issues in Saudi and Syrian newspapers.
He added, "In Iraq, I was captured early on and sent to the infamous Abu Ghraib prison, where inmates were tortured, then to Bucca prison, followed by Kober prison in Baghdad, and finally to Taji prison before being released.
He mentioned that he met many people in the prisons and became more politically mature.
He continued, "During my time in Iraq, especially in prison, I focused on planning my return to Syria. It was a coincidence that I was released just two days before the start of the Syrian revolution.
He emphasized that he set preconditions: "First, we will not repeat the Iraq experience in Syria. Second, we will not participate in any kind of sectarian wars; instead, our focus will be on fighting the regime.
