On Wednesday, the South Korean Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials detained President Yoon Suk-yeol, who faces charges of leading an insurrection and other accusations.
The office executed the arrest warrant for Yoon at 10:33 a.m., transferring him directly to the government complex in Gwacheon, south of Seoul.
President Yoon stated that he decided to comply with the anti-corruption agency's interrogation to avoid bloodshed while emphasizing that the agency's investigation is "illegal.
In a pre-recorded video message from his residence in Yongsan, central Seoul, before his arrest, Yoon explained, "To prevent an unfortunate and violent incident, I decided to comply with the Corruption Investigation Office, despite believing the investigation is illegal.
This marks the first time in South Korean history that a sitting president has been detained by investigative authorities.
The first attempt to execute the arrest warrant on January 3 failed after investigators faced a prolonged standoff with Yoon's security personnel, who prevented them from entering his residence.
