The United Nations representative in Iraq, Mohammed Al-Hassan, stated today, Thursday (December 12, 2024), that Iraq should not be a battleground for settling scores, noting that the country needs new decisions to serve the current situation and avoid crises.
During a press conference following his meeting with the Supreme Religious Authority, Sayyid Ali Al-Sistani, in Najaf, Al-Hassan mentioned, "We had a meeting with the Supreme Religious Authority, Sayyid Ali Al-Sistani, and the position of the religious authority is important to the United Nations. The Supreme Religious Authority is keen on Iraq and maintaining it from any tensions occurring in the region.
He added, "Today, I briefed the religious authority on the meetings held in America concerning Iraq, and we discussed with the religious authority ways to prevent any harmful tensions in Iraq. There is also direct coordination with UNAMI and the Iraqi government.
