National Nuclear Authority: Drafting of the Iraqi Nuclear Law is in its Final Stages

The National Nuclear Authority announced today, Thursday, that the drafting of the Iraqi Nuclear Law has reached its final stages, while emphasizing Iraq's commitment to enhancing international cooperation in the optimal use of nuclear technology and its peaceful applications.

Fadel Hawi Muzban, the Chairman of the National Authority for Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Control, said during his chairmanship of the Iraqi delegation participating in the ministerial conference on nuclear technology, applications, and the technical support program held at the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria: "Iraq's legitimate right to adopt nuclear options and support development programs in various sectors of health, agriculture, industry, sustainable development, and energy production, and the necessity of enhancing cooperation between countries in the optimal use of nuclear technology and its peaceful applications to serve humanity and support efforts aimed at achieving international peace and security.

He stressed "the legitimate right of countries to seek the safe and peaceful use of nuclear technology to enhance their developmental, economic, and health programs and support their future plans to obtain energy from diverse clean sources," noting that "the serious and real work of the Iraqi government to achieve this endeavor through its accession to many previous agreements and other agreements this year, including the Nuclear Safety Convention and the Joint Convention on the Safety and Management of Spent Fuel and Radioactive Waste Safety, as well as enacting and activating a number of relevant laws, including the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission Law of 2016 and the National Authority for Nuclear, Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Control Law of 2024.

He pointed out, "Iraq's efforts to finalize the drafting of the Iraqi Nuclear Law, which has reached its final stages, in line with the system of nuclear law and its four pillars: security, safety, safeguards, and civil liability for nuclear damage.

He mentioned "the Iraqi government's efforts to enhance continuous and constructive cooperation with the IAEA in building national capacities in all peaceful applications through the technical cooperation programs and projects provided by the IAEA, as well as training and development opportunities for young cadres and the approval of many national and regional projects." He praised "the effective role of technical cooperation projects with the IAEA in achieving the noble goal of the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
