In a meeting between Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the two leaders reviewed the bilateral relations between their countries and the outcomes of previous meetings held by joint committees to implement the memorandums of understanding signed during Erdoğan's visit to Baghdad in April.
The discussions touched on regional conditions, with both sides addressing the risks threatening the area due to ongoing crimes committed by the Israeli entity against the Palestinian people in Gaza for nearly a year, as well as the current Israeli aggression in Lebanon, which poses a threat of a comprehensive war in the region.
Al-Sudani emphasized the importance of working and coordinating on the "Iraq Development Road" project, affirming his personal follow-up on the outcomes of the agreements and joint memorandums of understanding. He clarified that his government's approach focuses on resolving outstanding issues and addressing matters related to the shared borders, based on the mechanism established to secure the borders with Iran. The Prime Minister assured that Iraqi territory would not be used as a launchpad for aggression or threats against any neighboring countries.
In another context, al-Sudani highlighted the importance of enhancing Islamic coordination to present a united stance that contributes to deterring Israeli aggression and halting the genocide against Palestinians and recent attacks on Lebanon.
For his part, Erdoğan reaffirmed Turkey's ongoing support for strengthening economic partnership with Iraq, particularly in the fight against terrorism and contributing to the "Development Road" projects based on principles of good neighborliness and goodwill. The Turkish President praised Iraq's steps aimed at supporting stability in the region, welcoming any initiatives that promote this direction.
