Britain withdraws its forces and cancels the deployment of troops in Iraq over fears they could become targets for Iran.

The British newspaper i revealed that British military personnel have been evacuated from their duties in Iraq amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran.

The newspaper quoted a military source saying that the UK Ministry of Defense has withdrawn several of its personnel from Iraq and canceled the planned deployment of forces that were scheduled to take part in military training as part of operations against ISIS.

According to the source, the decision came due to the “increased level of risk,” both in terms of personnel safety and the strategic risks associated with having British forces operating within the U.S. military framework, which could make them potential targets.

The report noted that British forces in Iraq had previously shot down Iranian drones during recent confrontations and that one strike last month landed within just 400 meters of their positions.

The report also mentioned that NATO took a similar step last month by withdrawing its advisory mission from Iraq and relocating hundreds of its personnel to bases in Europe after attacks targeted allied forces in the north of the country.

British forces are deployed at strategic sites across the Middle East, including a naval base in Bahrain that hosts around 300 personnel, in addition to about 200 soldiers supporting Iraqi and Kurdish forces through training and advisory roles.
