Iran’s Assembly of Experts announced the election of Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as the country’s new Supreme Leader, succeeding his father, who was assassinated at the beginning of the U.S.–Israeli attack on Tehran.
The Assembly of Experts called on the Iranian people to preserve unity and pledge allegiance to the new leader, saying that choosing Mojtaba Khamenei was necessary to prevent a leadership vacuum.
For its part, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared its allegiance to the new Supreme Leader. In a statement broadcast by state media, it said, "We are ready to follow the orders of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, with full support for the Assembly of Experts’ decision.”
