Trump considers ending the war on Iran without requiring the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday that U.S. President Donald Trump informed his aides that he is prepared to end the military campaign against Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed, postponing the complex operation to reopen it until a later time.

The newspaper quoted three U.S. administration officials as saying that “the Trump administration believes that the mission to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could prolong the war beyond 4 to 6 weeks.”

According to the officials, “Washington’s current objectives focus on weakening the Iranian navy and reducing its missile capabilities.”

The officials also noted that “additional military options against Iran are on the table, but they are not a priority for Trump at the moment.”

President Trump threatened on Monday to “wipe out” Kharg Island—a site of major strategic importance to Iran—if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz and if the talks, which he described as “serious,” do not lead to a “quick” result.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt later reiterated “the administration’s insistence on ending the U.S. war on Iran within two weeks.”

On Sunday evening, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that the United States had achieved “regime change” in Iran through the war it has been waging alongside Israel against Tehran for a month, citing the number of Iranian leaders who had been killed.

He described Iran’s new leadership as “more rational,” adding, "We are dealing with different people whom no one has dealt with before." It is a completely different group of people and more rational.”

When asked whether an agreement with Iran could be reached within the next week, Trump said, "I see an agreement on the horizon.”
