Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held talks in Washington with U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner regarding developments in the indirect negotiations with Iran. The meetings addressed security and regional issues, and Netanyahu is expected to meet President Donald Trump to discuss possible options against Iran should the negotiations fail. For his part, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council warned the United States against Israeli interference in the talks.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement on the platform, X: “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with the U.S. President’s special envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The Prime Minister, Witkoff, and Kushner discussed regional issues and received an update on the first round of negotiations they held with Iran last Friday.”
The U.S. website Axios quoted sources close to Netanyahu as saying, “The meeting, held at the presidential guest house (Blair House) in Washington, covered the latest developments in the round of indirect talks between Washington and Tehran, in which Witkoff and Kushner participated a few days ago. They provided the Israeli prime minister and his security team with a detailed briefing on the first round of these talks.”
Israel’s ambassador to Washington, Yehiel Leiter, posted a photo of the meeting, commenting that “work began within the first hour of the Prime Minister’s arrival in Washington,” expressing his “pleasure at meeting Witkoff and Kushner to discuss regional developments,” and highlighting the importance Israel places on the negotiation track with Iran ahead of the crucial meeting between Netanyahu and Trump.
Netanyahu’s visit to Washington comes amid tensions over recent Israeli actions in the West Bank and alongside U.S.–Iranian negotiations on the nuclear file. His talks with Trump are expected to focus on security and regional issues, foremost among them Iran and developments in the Palestinian territories.
CNN reported that Netanyahu intends to discuss potential military options against Iran with Trump during his visit, in anticipation of a possible failure in the U.S.–Iranian negotiations. It added that “Netanyahu will present Trump with new intelligence regarding Iran’s military capabilities, especially its ballistic missile program.”
Before departing for the United States, Netanyahu said, “During this visit, we will discuss a range of issues: Gaza, the region, but of course first and foremost the negotiations with Iran.” He added, “I will present to the President our views on the principles that should guide these negotiations. These principles are important not only for Israel but for everyone seeking peace and security.”
Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani warned the United States on Tuesday against what he described as Israel’s “disruptive role” in the nuclear negotiations, urging the Americans to remain vigilant and not allow Netanyahu to influence the framework of the talks.
