The trial of Marius Borg Høiby, the son of Norway’s Crown Princess, begins tomorrow on charges that include rape and domestic violence. The 29‑year‑old defendant faces 38 charges, and the trial is expected to continue until mid‑March. Høiby denies the rape allegations, although he previously admitted to being violent toward his former partner. The trial will include his testimony as well as statements from alleged victims and witnesses, with strict media‑reporting restrictions in place.
Norwegian security authorities announced late Sunday that Høiby, aged 29, had been arrested and now faces 38 charges, including rape, domestic violence, and assault. The trial is expected to run until mid‑March.
Høiby is the son of Mette‑Marit from a previous relationship before she married Crown Prince Haakon. He holds no royal title and is not an official member of the Norwegian royal household.
In the summer of 2024, Høiby admitted that he had been violent toward his then‑girlfriend while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine and that he had broken items in her apartment. However, he strongly denies the rape allegations, according to one of his lawyers.
On the first day of the trial, the indictment and opening statements will be read, and Høiby will respond to the accusations on the second day. Testimonies from several alleged victims and witnesses—including former girlfriends—will also be heard.
Strict rules have been imposed on media coverage related to the women involved, with many testimonies to be heard behind closed doors amid intense public and media interest in the case.
