Trump Announces Great Conversation with al-Sharaa and Damascus Reveals Details.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he had a “great conversation” with his Syrian counterpart Ahmad al-Sharaa, while the Syrian presidency disclosed details of the call and the issues discussed between the two sides.

Trump told reporters in Washington, “I had a great conversation with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa,” without revealing the content of the call.

For its part, the Syrian presidency stated Tuesday evening that “al-Sharaa received a lengthy phone call from Trump, during which they discussed developments in Syria’s transitional phase, efforts to strengthen security and stability, as well as prospects for bilateral cooperation serving regional and international stability.”

According to Syria’s official news agency (SANA), al-Sharaa stressed Syria’s full commitment to its territorial unity and national sovereignty, the preservation of state institutions, and the promotion of civil peace. He emphasized the importance of uniting international efforts to prevent the resurgence of terrorist organizations, foremost among them ISIS.

The statement added that “al-Sharaa affirmed that the ‘new Syria’ adopts an approach of openness and extends its hand for cooperation with all international parties on the basis of mutual interests and respect. He and the U.S. president agreed on the need to prioritize dialogue in resolving regional conflicts, with al-Sharaa stressing that ‘active diplomacy’ is the only path to overcoming chronic crises in the region.”

Trump, for his part, affirmed U.S. support for the Syrian people’s aspirations to build a unified and strong state. He welcomed the ceasefire agreement, describing it as a “turning point” toward ending the conflict, and praised understandings related to integrating military forces—including the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)—into official state institutions.

On the economic front, Trump expressed Washington’s readiness to support Syria’s reconstruction efforts by encouraging investment and creating an attractive environment for capital, stressing that Syria’s economic stability is “a cornerstone of Middle East stability.”

This call came as a source from the SDF told Shafaq News on Tuesday that SDF commander Mazloum Abdi and the co-chair of the Autonomous Administration’s Foreign Relations Department, Ilham Ahmed, met in Damascus to resume negotiations with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense had announced last Saturday the extension of the ceasefire with the SDF for 15 days, in support of the U.S. operation to evacuate ISIS prisoners from detention centers.

The SDF confirmed the extension, saying it was achieved “through international mediation, alongside ongoing dialogue with Damascus.”

A joint U.S.-British-European statement on Tuesday welcomed the 15-day extension of the ceasefire between the Syrian government and the SDF, urging all parties to strictly adhere to the truce.

The statement also called on all sides to resume negotiations as soon as possible with the aim of peacefully integrating the SDF into the Syrian state, based on the January 18 agreement. It further stressed the need to continue collective efforts against ISIS and urged all parties to avoid any security vacuum in detention facilities holding its members.
