A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer described Donald Trump’s criticism of NATO as mistaken, stressing that the alliance—including British forces—played a fundamental role in Afghanistan.
For his part, Trump criticized the absence of European countries from the confrontation in Afghanistan, arguing that NATO’s role depended on U.S. efforts. NATO Secretary‑General Mark Rutte reiterated the sacrifices made by Europeans and their support for America.
On Friday, the spokesperson for Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that U.S. President Donald Trump was wrong to belittle the role of NATO forces, especially the British armed forces, in Afghanistan.
Trump had launched strong criticism against NATO countries, accusing European forces of staying “away from the front lines” in Afghanistan, and emphasized that relations with the United States must be reciprocal.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump asserted that NATO would not exist without Washington’s efforts, praising his role in increasing member states’ contributions, while at the same time criticizing the policies of several European leaders—including French President Emmanuel Macron—on defense, immigration, energy, and economic growth.
For his part, NATO Secretary‑General Mark Rutte responded by affirming European sacrifices and their commitment to support America in the event of any attack.
Rutte cited the losses suffered by countries such as Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Denmark in Afghanistan.
