After Syrian events… Iraq issues an international call to eliminate ISIS once and for all.

This comes after bloody clashes between government forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) over several days, along with military operations in Kurdish-majority areas of northeastern Syria, before an announcement this evening of understandings reached between the two sides.

Iraq’s National Security Advisor, Qasim al-Araji, called for unifying international efforts to comprehensively eradicate ISIS while highlighting Syria’s need for political solutions following confrontations in its north. Developments indicated that SDF forces withdrew from al-Hol camp, while Hassakeh witnessed understandings between the government and the SDF.

On Tuesday evening, al-Araji urged uniting international efforts to eliminate ISIS completely after the recent security developments in Syria, stressing the need to find political solutions to address the roots of extremism.

In a post on the “X” platform, al-Araji said:
“Based on Iraq’s national and regional responsibility in confronting terrorism, we affirm that the danger of ISIS still poses a real threat to the security of the region and the world, benefiting from Syria’s instability and the security and humanitarian voids left by years of conflict.”

He added:
“Iraq calls for unifying international and regional efforts to comprehensively combat ISIS through security coordination, supporting political solutions, and addressing the roots of extremism, while ensuring security, stability, and achieving sustainable peace in the region and the world.”

Northern and eastern Syria have witnessed armed clashes between the army and the SDF in recent days. On Monday, the fighting escalated to prisons holding ISIS members, leading to mutual accusations between the two sides about opening or controlling the prisons.

In a notable development inside Syria, the SDF announced that its forces had withdrawn from al-Hol camp—which houses ISIS families, including Iraqis—and redeployed around northern Syrian cities facing increasing threats. The SDF attributed this move to “the international community’s indifferent stance toward the ISIS issue and its failure to assume responsibility for addressing this dangerous file.”

It is worth noting that the Syrian Presidency announced on Tuesday that a mutual understanding had been reached between the Syrian government and the SDF regarding several issues related to the future of Hassakeh province.

Meanwhile, SDF Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi accused the Syrian government of failing to respond to any ceasefire initiatives, stressing that al-Hol camp has been under heavy attack since last night.
