Amid the positive and optimistic atmosphere that marked the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the latter disclosed some behind-the-scenes details.

In a conversation with journalists via WhatsApp on Monday, Zelensky explained that the draft framework for peace and ending the war with Russia included U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine lasting 15 years.

He added that he requested from the U.S. president guarantees extending up to 50 years, according to Reuters.

Trump had announced Sunday evening that a peace agreement to end the war in Ukraine was close, though he noted no breakthrough had been made regarding the disputed territories following new talks with both the Ukrainian and Russian presidents.

Trump, who pledged to end the conflict on the first day of his presidency that began about a year ago, stated that it would become clear within weeks whether ending the war—which has claimed tens of thousands of lives since February 2022—was possible.

The current plan, revised after weeks of intense U.S.-Ukrainian negotiations, calls for halting the war along the current front lines in the eastern Donbas region and establishing a demilitarized zone.

Meanwhile, Moscow insists on this demand, as well as Ukraine abandoning its aspiration to join NATO and refraining from hosting European troops on its territory.
