Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro responded on Tuesday to U.S. President Donald Trump’s order for American forces to blockade Venezuela, stating that “Trump would be better off focusing on his own country’s issues rather than threatening Caracas.”

In a televised address, Maduro said, “President Trump would be better off in his own country and in the world—better off economically and socially at home, and better off globally—if he focused on his country’s affairs.”

Previously, Trump had announced that the U.S. would soon launch a ground operation in Venezuela, stating that Washington aimed to expand its strikes against drug cartels in Latin America, not limited to Venezuela alone.

In a legally and politically controversial move, Trump also declared that “the United States will retain the oil seized from Venezuelan tankers in international waters,” justifying the action as part of “efforts to combat smuggling and drug trafficking.”
