Authorities have announced that Japan’s Niigata Prefecture is expected to approve the decision to restart the world’s largest nuclear power plant on Monday. This marks a pivotal moment in the country’s return to nuclear energy following the 2011 Fukushima disaster.
The Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant, located about 220 kilometers northwest of Tokyo, was one of 54 reactors shut down after a massive earthquake and tsunami crippled the Fukushima Daiichi facility in what became the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.
Since then, Japan has restarted 14 of the 33 reactors still deemed operable, as the country seeks to reduce its reliance on imported fossil fuels.
Kashiwazaki-Kariwa will be the first plant operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) to resume operations since the Fukushima incident.
