Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani inaugurated the Saint Krikor Armenian Orthodox Church in central Baghdad on Sunday, following its restoration, in celebration of the upcoming Christmas holiday.
During his visit, the prime minister toured the church’s halls and corridors to observe the comprehensive renovation of this significant religious site. In his speech, he expressed his appreciation for being present at the reopening of the church after the completion of its restoration. He emphasized that the church stands as a witness to the innocent victims of terrorism in Al-Tayaran Square—peaceful Iraqi citizens who lost their lives.

He highlighted that the reconstruction of the church symbolizes the diversity and coexistence of the new Iraq. It represents a step toward reviving Baghdad’s cultural vibrancy and preserving its historical, cultural, and architectural heritage. He affirmed that restoring the church is both a duty and a commitment to a cherished segment of the Iraqi people. He also extended his gratitude to all those who contributed to the restoration efforts and reaffirmed the government’s dedication to preserving heritage and showcasing Baghdad’s historical identity through the revival of its architectural landmarks.
The Prime Minister further noted the ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the historic districts of Baghdad and their enduring landmarks, continuing the approach of safeguarding the city’s architectural legacy—one that shines through its churches, mosques, and buildings. He affirmed that thanks to the sacrifices of martyrs from all segments of Iraqi society, the country has emerged victorious and united from its battle against terrorism and is now moving forward with reconstruction and a comprehensive economic and developmental renaissance.
The Saint Krikor Armenian Orthodox Church underwent extensive maintenance, renovation, and restoration—the most significant such effort since its establishment in 1957—aimed at reviving this important religious and cultural landmark.
