U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States will soon launch ground strikes targeting drug cartels in Latin America.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Friday, Trump said, “We’ve managed to stop 96 percent of drug smuggling by sea, and now we’ll begin the ground offensive—it’s much easier, and it will start soon.”

According to Bloomberg, Trump once again declined to provide details on when or where the military escalation would begin, or whether countries could take any steps to avoid the ground strikes.

The president has for several days pledged to expand his campaign, following a series of Pentagon-led attacks on what Washington describes as drug-smuggling boats in international waters off the coast of South America.

The U.S. has deployed a significant number of naval warships in the Caribbean as part of its anti-narcotics efforts.

The U.S. administration considers itself at war with what it calls “narco-terrorists,” though experts argue that the strikes on smuggling vessels amount to extrajudicial killings—even if the targets are known traffickers.

Amid the American military buildup, tensions in the region have escalated. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has accused Washington of using the drug trade as a pretext to overthrow his government.
