Iranian media reported on Saturday that authorities had arrested 18 crew members of a foreign tanker seized in the Gulf of Oman the previous day. Officials claim the vessel was carrying six million liters of smuggled fuel.

According to reports citing the judiciary in Hormozgan Province, the ship’s captain is among those detained as part of an ongoing investigation. The name of the tanker and the nationalities of the crew have not been disclosed.

Authorities stated that the vessel committed multiple violations, including ignoring stop orders, attempting to flee, and lacking proper navigation and shipping documents.

Iran, where fuel prices are among the lowest in the world due to heavy subsidies and a weak currency, continues to combat rampant fuel smuggling—both overland to neighboring countries and by sea to Gulf Arab states.
