U.S. President Donald Trump issued a warning on Friday to Colombian President Gustavo Petro, urging him to “reconsider” his stance on combating drug trafficking.
Speaking to reporters in response to a question about the possibility of meeting with the Colombian president, Trump said, “I haven’t thought much about him. Colombia produces a lot of drugs; they have cocaine labs, and they’re selling it to the United States.”
He continued, “So he needs to recalculate, or he’ll be next,” referring to the U.S. campaign against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Trump also warned Venezuela that U.S. forces might strike ground targets to go after drug cartels.
Venezuela rejected the American threats and Washington’s accusations of involvement in drug trafficking.
In response, Colombian President Gustavo Petro declared that any targeting of Colombian territory would be considered “an act of war” and would destroy bilateral relations between Bogotá and Washington.
