French President Emmanuel Macron has threatened to impose tariffs on China in the coming months.
In an interview with the French newspaper Les Échos, Macron stated, “I have informed China that if they do not take action, we Europeans will be forced in the coming months to take firm measures similar to those of the United States, such as imposing tariffs on Chinese products.”
He added that “China is attacking the core of the European industrial and innovation model, which has historically relied on machine tools and automobiles.”
Macron continued, “We are currently caught between both sides, and this is a matter of life or death for European industry,” noting that the protectionist policies of the Trump administration “exacerbate our problems by significantly redirecting Chinese trade flows toward our markets.”
He also emphasized that Chinese investments in Europe “should not be exploitative—that is, they should not aim to impose dominance or create dependency.”
Macron concluded by saying, “We are stuck today between both sides, and this is a life-or-death issue for European industry. We cannot keep importing endlessly. Chinese companies must come to Europe.”
