In a move signaling a dramatic shift in Japan’s defense policy, the Japanese government, led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, has announced plans to boost defense spending and develop its domestic arms industry. According to The Economist, this shift comes in response to increasing aggression from China and North Korea, as well as growing distrust in the U.S. alliance under President Donald Trump.

Takaichi is focusing on raising defense budgets to 2% of GDP, enhancing intelligence capabilities, and strengthening the weapons industry, the report states.

The Japanese destroyer JS Chōkai arrived in California a few weeks ago to be equipped with American Tomahawk cruise missiles—the first of hundreds Japan plans to acquire. These missiles are capable of reaching deep into mainland China and North Korea, marking a significant milestone in Japan’s transformation from a constitutionally pacifist nation to a modern military power.

These developments have raised concerns in the region, with observers warning of a potential new arms race in Asia. Japanese officials justify the moves as necessary to defend national sovereignty amid rising threats and doubts about the U.S. commitment to traditional alliances.
