U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he had a “very productive” meeting with New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, and expressed his support for him.

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said, “We just had a great meeting… very productive. We have something in common: we want our beloved city to thrive.” He added, “The better he does, the happier I’ll be… We’ll help him achieve everyone’s dream,” and emphasized, “I’ll feel safe living in New York with Mamdani as mayor.”

Trump described Mamdani as a very rational person who loves New York, stating, “He’s not an extremist.” However, Trump noted that they did not discuss whether Mamdani would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited New York.

In response, Mamdani said, “What I really appreciated about the president is that our meeting didn’t focus on points of disagreement—of which there are many—but rather on our shared goal of serving the people of New York.”

In a separate interview with Fox News on Friday, Trump remarked that he and Mamdani would “get along well” despite their differing political philosophies. “Mamdani and I differ in style, but we share the same goal: making New York stronger,” he said.
