On Tuesday, the Electoral Commission released its midday report on the general election day, announcing a voter turnout of 23%.
The report indicated that voting rates were relatively close across most cities, ranging between 25% and 30%. Najaf recorded the lowest turnout at 18%, while Salah al-Din had the highest at 31%.
The general voting process for the sixth parliamentary session began on Tuesday morning as part of the democratic practice established in Iraq’s political system after 2003.
Approximately 21 million eligible voters out of Iraq’s nearly 46 million population have the right to elect 329 members to represent them in the upcoming parliamentary term. Over 7,000 candidates of both genders are competing, spread across 37 political alliances and coalitions throughout Iraq’s regions and cities.
