Hurricane Melissa has claimed the lives of 46 people in the Caribbean region, according to a total death toll reported by the American television network NBC.
Updated data shows that 26 Haitians died, 19 people were killed in Jamaica, and one person in the Dominican Republic.
As it passed through these countries, Hurricane Melissa was classified as a Category 4 or 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
The maximum wind speed at its center reached 82 meters per second.
According to the latest data from the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Melissa passed through the Bahamas and is now moving deep into the Atlantic Ocean. It has since weakened and transitioned into a post-tropical cyclone.
