U.S. President Donald Trump affirmed on Wednesday that there are no risks to the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Speaking aboard Air Force One en route to South Korea, Trump said:

“Nothing will jeopardize the ceasefire,” noting that “the Israeli airstrikes were in response to the killing of an Israeli soldier.”

He added:

“Hamas targeted an Israeli soldier, and Israel responded with gunfire. This will not endanger the ceasefire. Hamas must behave—if it doesn’t, it will be destroyed.”

Trump continued:

“If we have to, we’ll eliminate Hamas very easily, and that will be the end of it,” adding, “We prefer not to do that. We’ve made an agreement with them.”

Meanwhile, an Israeli security official stated that Hamas fighters opened fire on an Israeli military unit inside the Gaza Strip, indicating that militants emerged from a tunnel in the Rafah area and launched anti-tank missiles at army forces.

Hamas, for its part, denied involvement in the shooting of the Israeli soldier in Rafah and reaffirmed its commitment to the ceasefire.
