U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday ruled out running for vice president in the upcoming 2028 election—a proposal floated by some of his supporters as a way for the Republican president to serve a third term.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “I’d be allowed to do that,” adding, “I wouldn’t do it. I think it’s too adorable. Yes, I’d rule that out. I think people wouldn’t like it. It wouldn’t be right.”
He noted that there are “good people” who could run in 2028, naming two prominent members of his administration and describing them as “almost unbeatable” if they were to run together for vice president.
He continued: “Obviously, the Vice President is great. Marco Rubio is great too… I’m not sure anyone would run against them. So I think if they acted as a team, they’d be hard to stop.”
Under the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, no person may be elected president more than twice.
Some have suggested that one way to circumvent this restriction is for Trump to run as vice president while another candidate runs for president. If the new president then resigns, Trump—as vice president—would assume the presidency once again.
Trump had previously acknowledged that this scenario (with Vance running and then stepping down) could be one way for him to return to office in 2028⁽¹⁾⁽²⁾⁽³⁾.
