Mentally Disturbed Man Breaks into Washington State Capitol and Sets Fire in Reception Hall.

A man broke into the Capitol building in Washington State, smashed a glass door, set fire to a carpet and a flag, and toppled two busts—one of George Washington and another of Martin Luther King Jr.—before being arrested by state police.

Chris Loftis, spokesperson for the Washington State Patrol, stated that the man, who has a history of mental health issues, was booked into Thurston County Jail on charges of first-degree burglary, first-degree arson, and first-degree malicious mischief.

Parked in the Flower Garden

Loftis added in an email that “the suspect’s actions inside the Capitol were highly deliberate but appear to stem from a mental health crisis of some kind,” according to the Associated Press.

The suspect parked his car in the flower garden in front of the legislative building around 10:15 p.m. on Sunday. A staff member from the Department of Enterprise Services, which oversees the Capitol complex, noticed him and alerted the police.

 Armed with Two Hammers

The suspect was reportedly carrying two hammers. He entered through a ground-floor office window and proceeded to the upper floor, damaging several items as he roamed the building.

Lieutenant Governor Denny Heck said that flags placed on either side of the dome were knocked down, and one was burned. He added:

“He broke a glass door and entered the formal reception hall, where he set fire to several items, including the original carpet, which is considered a priceless treasure.”

The incident has sparked concern over security and preservation of historical artifacts in the Capitol.
