Indonesian authorities announced on Thursday that 59 people remain trapped under the rubble of an Islamic boarding school that collapsed earlier this week on the island of Java, resulting in at least five confirmed deaths so far.
The National Disaster Management Agency reported that the incident occurred at the "Al-Khozaini" Islamic boarding school in East Java province, noting that most of the missing are students aged between 12 and 17 years.
Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari stated, “The latest statistics confirm that 59 people are still under the rubble,” adding that “some survivors may not have reported their whereabouts yet.”
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the disaster. Preliminary findings suggest structural issues in the building and non-compliance with construction standards.
