U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet on Monday with congressional leaders from both the Republican and Democratic parties amid a looming threat of a government shutdown.
The meeting will include House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, according to the Associated Press, citing a White House source.
Trump had previously urged congressional Republicans to vote for a temporary extension of government funding to avoid a shutdown, accusing Democrats of pushing the country toward that scenario.
With the new fiscal year beginning on October 1st and no budget yet approved, failure by Congress to pass even a temporary funding resolution could lead to a prolonged paralysis of federal agencies.
Notably, the longest government shutdown in U.S. history lasted 35 days and occurred during Trump’s first term in office.
