A U.S. State Department spokesperson on Monday criticized the recent recognition of the State of Palestine by Washington’s allies, calling the move “performative.”
According to Agence France-Presse, the spokesperson—speaking on condition of anonymity—said the actions were “for show only.”
He added, “We continue to prioritize serious diplomacy over populism. Our priorities are clear: the release of hostages and the security, peace, and prosperity of Israel and the region—which will be guaranteed when Hamas is no longer part of the equation.”
On Sunday, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia officially recognized the State of Palestine, just ahead of a conference scheduled for Monday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, jointly led by Saudi Arabia and France. France is expected to announce its recognition of Palestine as well.
In response, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs thanked Canada, the UK, and Australia, describing their recognition as “brave decisions aligned with international law and legitimacy, driven by a commitment to ending the occupation and achieving peace that ensures the security, stability, and prosperity of the region and the world.”
The ministry also urged countries that have not yet recognized Palestine—foremost among them the United States—to take the initiative and align themselves with international law and the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice and to stand on the right side of history.
