UN Session on Syria: Calls to Lift Sanctions and End Israeli Attacks.

The United Nations Security Council held a special session on Syria, focusing on the political solution process, the aftermath of events in Sweida, the humanitarian situation, and Israeli attacks. The overall message emphasized the need to support the Syrian people.

UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen stressed that any dispute with Israel should be resolved based on the 1974 agreement. He called for “lifting sanctions imposed on Damascus and ending foreign interventions,” while highlighting the importance of transitional justice and preparing conditions for parliamentary elections without haste.

Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher urged the international community to maintain “momentum in supporting Syria’s recovery” and called for “lifting unilateral sanctions and increasing humanitarian aid, especially to displacement areas and southern Syria.”

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ibrahim Alalbi, stated that the Security Council is “unified around the historic opportunity for a new Syria,” noting that the country is “moving forward in its recovery and reconstruction after years of war.”

He added that the Syrian government has made significant efforts to address the impact of the Sweida events, with a roadmap aimed at gradually building trust, promoting national reconciliation, delivering aid, restoring services, and rebuilding affected villages.

Alalbi emphasized that “Syria will remain resilient against attempts to sow division, hatred, and extremism,” and renewed Syria’s call for the Security Council to take immediate action to condemn Israeli attacks on its territory. He also called for “compelling Israel to fully withdraw from occupied lands.”

China reaffirmed its support for Syria’s sovereignty, underscored its friendship with Damascus, and urged Israel to withdraw completely from Syrian territory. It also called for increased international funding for humanitarian efforts.

The United States, through its representative Dorothy Shea, expressed readiness to assist Syria in reconstruction and rebuilding international relations, affirming that “the Syrian people deserve security and prosperity after decades of tyranny,” and welcomed Saudi Arabia’s efforts to promote stability.

France viewed the Sweida roadmap as “an encouraging first step” and called on Israel to end its military activities in Syria. Meanwhile, the UK urged continued dialogue among all parties and encouraged Damascus to take comprehensive political steps.
