U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to meet on Friday evening in New York with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani to discuss the aftermath of the Israeli airstrike targeting Hamas leaders in Doha, according to two informed sources.
The meeting is viewed as another gesture by Trump to signal his support for Doha and his opposition to the Israeli strike, as reported by Axios.
From the Qatari side, the meeting with Trump is considered part of a broader diplomatic campaign to increase international pressure on Israel to end the war in Gaza.
The Qatari prime minister is scheduled to arrive in Washington, D.C., on Friday and meet with Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House, according to the State Department.
Two sources also indicated that Al Thani plans to meet with U.S. Vice President JD Vance.
Additionally, the sources noted that the prime minister is expected to travel to New York Friday evening to meet with Trump and White House envoy Steve Witkoff.
Among the topics to be discussed in Washington is a proposed U.S.-Qatar security agreement, according to informed sources.
This information follows Qatar’s statement on Thursday rejecting claims that it is reassessing its security partnership with the United States, calling such reports “completely false.” Qatar emphasized that its security and defense ties with Washington are “stronger than ever and continue to grow,” according to a statement from the Qatari International Media Office.
Qatar also described the earlier Axios report as a “desperate attempt” to damage its relationship with the United States.
