Trump Affirms: I Will Speak with Putin Soon and Work to End the War in Ukraine.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he will soon speak with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, following video talks earlier in the day with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders.

During a dinner event with top U.S. tech company executives, Trump was asked whether he would speak with Putin soon. He replied, “Yes, I will speak with him,” adding that he intends to work toward ending the war in Ukraine.

Trump’s statement came after his video communication with leaders of a coalition of countries supporting Ukraine, following a meeting of the coalition held in Paris.

In his discussions with these leaders, Trump addressed the security guarantees that should be provided to Kyiv and ways to intensify pressure on Russia to bring it to the negotiating table for peace talks.

The “Coalition of the Willing” includes around 30 countries, mostly European, that support Kyiv in its confrontation with Russia, which began in 2022.

On Thursday, coalition leaders held talks—some in person in Paris, others via video conferencing—to discuss security guarantees for Kyiv in any potential peace agreement with Moscow.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met in the French capital with Steve Witkoff, the special envoy of the U.S. president.

European leaders are urging Trump to impose new American sanctions on Russia.

The U.S. president, who recently expressed deep disappointment with Putin, hinted on Wednesday at the possibility of new sanctions against Russia if it does not respond to peace efforts, though he did not go into detail.
