U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that the United States is no longer spending money on the conflict in Ukraine, noting that the details of Kyiv’s “security guarantees” have not yet been discussed.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “We’re not paying any money to Ukraine… Right now, we’re not losing any money. Now we’re selling weapons to NATO, because NATO countries—thanks to me—agreed to increase defense spending to 5%.”
The U.S. president added that the details of Kyiv’s “security guarantees” have not yet been discussed, saying, “We haven’t even discussed the details of this matter.”
Trump believes the conflict in Ukraine is becoming more complicated due to personal elements involved, but he asserted that it will be resolved nonetheless.
While signing a series of executive orders at the White House, he remarked, “Frankly, I thought Ukraine and Russia would be the easiest,” adding, “But it turns out there are widespread personal conflicts here.”
He emphasized the need to end hostilities: “But we will stop this over time.”
Previously, President Trump—who had repeatedly criticized his predecessor Joe Biden for allocating billions in military aid to Ukraine—announced a new plan to supply Kyiv with weapons through NATO allies.
He explained that the United States will sell a large shipment of weapons to European countries worth billions of dollars, including missiles, air defense systems, and ammunition. The allies will then transfer them to Ukraine and replenish their stockpiles through new purchases from American companies. Trump confirmed that the plan has received full approval and will be implemented soon using NATO countries’ funds.
It is worth noting that Russia had previously warned that supplying weapons to Ukraine hinders resolution efforts and directly draws NATO countries into the conflict, describing it as “playing with fire.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that any shipments containing weapons for Ukraine would be considered legitimate targets by Russia, while the Kremlin declared that the West’s arms flow into Ukraine does not contribute to negotiations and will have a negative impact.
