U.S. Senator at Religious Conference in Damascus: The Efforts of the Syrian Church Inspired Me.

U.S. Senator Joe Wilson commented on Monday evening about his participation in a religious conference held in the Syrian capital, Damascus, describing the efforts made by leaders of the Syrian church as “inspiring.”

In a post on the platform “X,” Wilson stated that he is currently in Damascus to attend a “historic” interfaith conference being held at the Monastery of Saint Ephrem the Syrian Orthodox in Saidnaya.

He said, “I’m honored to join the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, and Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen in meeting with leaders of the Syrian church at a conference that brings together religious figures from all faiths and denominations.”

He added, “I was inspired by the efforts of Syrian church leaders to promote religious freedom in the post-Assad era.”

He concluded his statement by saying, “Let’s make Syria great again.”

This visit is notable in both its timing and content, amid ongoing complexities surrounding the Syrian issue on both political and religious fronts.
