The Kremlin announced on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the Iranian nuclear program and the recent summit with U.S. President Donald Trump in Alaska with his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian.

The Iranian president told his Russian counterpart, “We have not and will not seek to acquire nuclear weapons.”

The Kremlin also stated that the two leaders agreed during their phone call to hold a bilateral meeting at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China on August 31 and September 1.

Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15 and days later hosted Ukrainian President Zelensky and European leaders in Washington.

While the U.S. president affirmed his efforts to bring together his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed on Saturday that there is currently no “plan” for such a meeting.

Trump renewed his threat to impose sanctions on Russia if no progress is made toward a peaceful resolution in Ukraine within two weeks, expressing frustration with Moscow following his meeting with Putin in Alaska.
