Al-Hassan Affirms Continued UN Support for Iraq After UNAMI Mission Ends.

On Tuesday, the United Nations Secretary-General’s representative in Iraq, Mohamed Al-Hassan, confirmed that the UN will continue its approach of supporting and assisting Iraq even after the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) concludes at the end of 2025.

This statement came during a memorial ceremony honoring the victims of the bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad on August 19, 2003, which resulted in the deaths of 22 people and injured more than 100 others.

In his speech, Al-Hassan stated that the UN mission in Iraq will end its operations by the end of this year, but the foundations it was built upon will not cease with the mission’s conclusion. He emphasized that the UN will continue working with the Iraqi people, the presidency, and the government.

Al-Hassan also praised the efforts of the Iraqi people and their government for supporting the mission “even in the most difficult times,” adding that “what we have achieved together in Iraq will benefit the entire region.”
