U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday, after discussions with European leaders, that Europe could offer security guarantees to Ukraine as part of a potential peace agreement with Russia, in coordination with the United States.
Trump described his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European partners as “very good,” noting that he has begun arrangements for a meeting between Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a time and place to be determined later, following a phone call he had with Putin.
He added that Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and special envoy Steve Whitkoff will coordinate the details between the two countries to facilitate this important meeting.
For its part, the Kremlin commented on the call, saying that Putin and Trump held a phone conversation lasting about 40 minutes and described the discussion as “frank and highly constructive.”
It continued: “Trump informed Putin of the negotiations with Zelensky and European leaders; both presidents expressed their support for continued direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations.”
The Kremlin revealed, “Putin and Trump discussed the idea of elevating the level of direct Russian-Ukrainian negotiations; the two presidents agreed to maintain close contact with each other regarding the Ukrainian crisis and other pressing issues.”
According to the Kremlin, Putin emphasized the importance of the efforts being made by the U.S. president to resolve the Ukrainian crisis.
Agence France-Presse quoted a source familiar with the talks as saying that Putin told Trump he is ready to meet with Zelensky.
