Trump Talks of Major Progress… Witkoff: Russia Made Concessions.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that “major progress” had been made toward ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, following a summit held two days earlier with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

Trump wrote on his platform, Truth Social: “Major progress on Russia. Stay tuned for news!” without providing further details.

Meanwhile, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that Russia had made “some concessions” regarding five Ukrainian regions it had claimed. Speaking to CNN, Witkoff said, “The Russians made some concessions… on all five regions,” referring to Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia—partially controlled by Russia and annexed in 2024—as well as Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014.

Witkoff also revealed that Trump and Putin agreed on “robust security guarantees” for Ukraine during their Alaska summit, describing them as “game-changing.” He said the guarantees resemble NATO’s Article 5 mutual defense clause⁽¹⁾.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told CBS on Sunday that the United States would continue efforts to help end the war in Ukraine, though success is not guaranteed. “If peace isn’t possible and the war continues, thousands more will die… we don’t want that.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking Sunday ahead of his scheduled meeting with Trump in Washington, said he saw “no indication” that Russia was ready for a trilateral summit with the U.S. He made the remarks during a joint press conference in Brussels with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Zelenskyy stated, “At this stage, there is no indication from Russia that a trilateral summit will take place.”

Von der Leyen emphasized that there should be no restrictions on Ukraine’s armed forces or foreign aid to Kyiv. “There must be no limits on Ukraine’s military capabilities, whether through cooperation with other nations or receiving assistance.

She also welcomed Trump’s proposal to offer Ukraine security guarantees inspired by NATO’s treaty, stressing the importance of such measures to end the war with Russia.
