Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced on Saturday that her country, which currently holds the presidency of the European Union, is considering imposing sanctions on Israel.

In an interview with the local newspaper Jyllands-Posten, Frederiksen stated, “Netanyahu has now become a problem in himself,” adding that the Israeli government “is going too far.”

The center-right leader condemned the humanitarian situation in Gaza, describing it as “horrific and extremely catastrophic,” and criticized Israel’s plan to continue its settlement project in the West Bank.

She explained, “We are among the countries that want to increase pressure on Israel, but we have not yet received support from other EU members,” noting that she wants to explore “political pressure and sanctions, whether against settlers, ministers, or even against Israel as a whole.”

According to her, “We are not ruling anything out in advance, and as with Russia, we are planning sanctions to have the greatest impact.” However, Denmark does not currently intend to recognize a Palestinian state anytime soon.

Earlier this week, 24 countries issued a joint statement addressing the humanitarian situation in Gaza and urged Israel to allow unrestricted entry of aid into the Strip.
