In a direct response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s statements regarding his plans to deploy the National Guard in Washington, D.C., former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton described the move as “unbalanced,” pointing out that violent crime rates in the city have reached their lowest levels in three decades.

Clinton wrote in a post on her account on the platform “X” (formerly Twitter):

“As you listen to the unbalanced Trump trying to justify deploying the National Guard in Washington, D.C., here’s the truth: violent crime rates in the capital are at their lowest levels in 30 years.”

Clinton based her remarks on data from the U.S. Department of Justice, which showed a 35% decrease in violent crime rates in 2024 compared to 2023. This includes a 32% drop in homicides, a 39% decrease in robberies, and a 53% decline in armed carjackings.

American media outlets, including Axios and UNILAD, highlighted that Trump’s statements about worsening crime in the capital contradict official statistics. However, a report by the Washington Free Beacon noted that a senior officer in the D.C. police department was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into allegations of possible manipulation of some crime data, raising questions about the accuracy of certain figures.
