Trump excludes the possibility of running in the next presidential election.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he may not run for president again when asked about the possibility but later expressed interest in doing so.

In an interview with CNBC, Trump stated:

No. Probably not.

He then added:

“I’d like to run. I have the best poll numbers I’ve ever had, because people love what I’m doing.”

U.S. presidents are limited to two terms in office, each lasting four years, whether consecutive or not. Trump is currently serving his second, non-consecutive term (2017–2021 and 2025–2029).

Back in March, Trump hinted at seeking a third term, telling NBC News:

“I’m not joking about the possibility of running for a third term.”

and added:

“There are ways to make it happen.”

The 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution clearly states:

“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

However, Politico previously outlined four potential strategies Trump might consider to bypass this amendment:

- Amending the Constitution

- Exploiting legal loopholes

- Ignoring the restriction

- Challenging it outright

One such loophole suggests that while the Constitution prohibits being elected president more than twice, it doesn’t explicitly prevent someone from serving again if they assume office through another role—such as being elected vice president and then ascending to the presidency.

Among the more extreme scenarios, Politico noted that Trump could attempt to remain in power beyond 2029, defying legal norms. His vice president, J.D. Vance, has previously suggested that the executive branch may not be bound by judicial decisions.
