Trump Places Iraq in Highest U.S. Tariff Bracket.

On Thursday evening, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order increasing tariffs on dozens of countries with whom the U.S. believes it has an unfavorable trade balance. The White House described the move as part of a broader effort to “restructure global trade to benefit American workers.”

A senior White House official stated that the tariffs will take effect on August 7—seven days later than originally scheduled.

In its statement, the White House explained that the new tariffs range from 10% to 41%, with Brazil facing the highest rate of 50% on imported goods.

?? Syria topped the list, facing the steepest tariff of 41%, applied to countries without bilateral trade agreements with the U.S.

 Tariffs on select Arab countries:

- Jordan: 15%

- Tunisia: 25%

- Algeria and Libya: 30%

- Iraq: 35%

- Syria: 41%

Countries with trade agreements will be subject to the rates defined in those agreements, although most still face tariffs between 10% and 15%.

 Tariffs on select other countries:

- United Kingdom: 10%

- European Union, Japan, South Korea: 15%

- India: 25%

- South Africa: 30%

- Serbia: 35%

- Switzerland: 39%

- Laos: 40%

- Brazil: 50%

The increased tariffs sparked widespread concern among exporters to the United States.

Canada, too, was affected: Trump raised tariffs from 25% to 35% on Canadian goods not covered by NAFTA.

Meanwhile, several Asian countries heavily reliant on the U.S. market expressed relief over reduced tariff rates—Cambodia and Thailand saw their tariffs drop from 36% to 19%.

Taiwan also voiced hope for a future agreement to reduce its current tariff rate of 20%.
