On Saturday, the Municipality Directorate of Al-Kut in Wasit Governorate announced its decision to demolish the "Hypermarket" building that was severely damaged by fire days earlier. Authorities warned against entering or approaching the structure.
According to a statement, based on a technical report submitted by the Engineering Consulting Office at Wasit University and endorsed by the governorate, the building is now unusable and poses a danger to surrounding properties.
The municipality confirmed that demolition will proceed after the completion of legal procedures. Residents were strictly cautioned against accessing the site.
The fire, which erupted at the hypermarket on July 17, resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries, marking one of the most tragic incidents in Iraq this year. The disaster prompted widespread calls for transparent investigations and accountability.
Before resigning, the governor of Wasit, Mohammed Jameel Al-Miyahi, revealed further details about the hypermarket, noting:
- It was a privately owned property that had originally been zoned for residential use.
- It was converted into a commercial venue and opened two years ago as a restaurant.
On Tuesday, Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani approved the findings of the investigative committee into the fire. These findings included:
- Referring the governor of Wasit, in his role as head of the Civil Defense Committee, along with other committee members, for investigation to determine responsibility and causes of negligence.
