Trump escalates against Canada by imposing an additional 35% tariff.

On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced an additional 35% tariff on all imports coming from Canada, effective August 1st.

Trump sent an official letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, stating:

"Instead of cooperating with the United States, Canada responded by imposing its own tariffs. Beginning August 1, 2025, we will impose a 35% tariff on Canadian products sent to the United States, separate from all sector-specific tariffs."

He added that the tariffs may change, either increasing or decreasing, depending on the trajectory of the relationship with Ottawa. Trump confirmed that these new measures are in addition to existing tariffs on key sectors such as steel, aluminum, and automobiles—goods that form the backbone of Canada’s exports to its largest trading partner, the United States.

On his side, Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to Trump’s decision with a post on the social media platform "X," saying:

"Throughout the ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, the Canadian government has steadfastly defended our workers and businesses, and we will continue to do so as we approach the revised deadline of August 1."

He explained:

"Canada has made substantial progress in curbing the fentanyl epidemic in North America, and we remain committed to working with the United States to save lives and protect communities in both countries."

He continued:

"We are building a strong Canada. The federal government, provinces, and territories are making remarkable progress toward a unified Canadian economy. We are ready to launch a series of major new projects that serve the national interest while strengthening our global trade partnerships."
