Israeli Chief of Staff General Herzi Halevi revealed that a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas is available, pending instructions from the political leadership, and affirmed that the war is "costing us human losses."
Speaking at the graduation ceremony of the 52nd class of the National Security College, Halevi said the war in the Gaza Strip is among the most complex in Israel’s history. He noted it presents tough challenges and causes painful human losses for the country.
He pointed out that conditions are now favorable for reaching a prisoner exchange deal with Hamas, adding, “Our forces demonstrated high operational capabilities that created favorable conditions for progress on this front, and we await directions from the political leadership to achieve that.”
He stressed that the army continues its operations in Gaza with a clear mission to “recover the hostages and resolve the conflict,” confirming the army’s commitment to governmental directives.
Despite highlighting the achievements, Halevi did not hide the heavy toll of the war. He stated, “Unfortunately, the war is costing us human lives. I offer my condolences to the families of the soldiers from the Netzah Yehuda Battalion who were recently killed,” referring to the Beit Hanoun ambush carried out by Palestinian resistance forces.
Halevi explained that Israel’s security strategy relies on military decisiveness, maintaining qualitative superiority, and deepening its alliance with the United States.
He also called for expanding recruitment efforts and boosting military readiness, arguing that regional challenges require a qualified and cohesive human force.
