The ceasefire between Israel and Iran went into effect today, Tuesday, after 12 days of unprecedented clashes between the two countries. U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the truce had begun after both sides were urged to end the war, as he stated.
Some observers considered the agreement the best possible outcome for all parties involved in the conflict, according to the Associated Press.
Losses in Recent Days
However, the losses over the past days were significant for both sides, though to varying degrees.
The war cost Israel hundreds of millions of dollars daily. The cost of intercepting Iranian missiles and drones was extremely high estimated at $200 million per day, according to experts.
The "David’s Sling" system, used to intercept short- and long-range missiles, cost approximately $700,000 every time it was activated, according to Yehoshua Kalisky, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv.
Kalisky noted that the Arrow 3 system, used during the clashes to intercept long-range ballistic missiles, cost about $4 million per interception, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. The older Arrow 2 system cost around $3 million per interception.
Material Damage
Repairing damaged buildings in cities like Tel Aviv, Haifa, and Be’er Sheva was estimated to exceed $400 million. Around 30 Israelis were reportedly killed during the hostilities.
As for Iran, due to more extensive physical damage in multiple areas, including military and nuclear sites, the cost was also very high reaching into the billions of dollars.
The precise extent of the damage to nuclear facilities, particularly in Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow—bombed by the United States last Saturday—remains unknown. However, years of effort and billions of dollars had gone into developing those facilities, and any potential reconstruction would be extremely costly.
The biggest toll for Tehran came in human losses: around 650 people were killed, and thousands injured. Among the dead were top military commanders, including Chief of Staff Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, IRGC Commander Hossein Salami, and Ali Shadmani, head of the “Khatam al-Anbiya” central command—just days after his appointment—along with dozens of others.
An Israeli source confirmed that about 30 senior Iranian military commanders were assassinated. Israeli media also reported that more than 17 scientists were targeted and killed by Israel.
